What is the Arkansas CDL knowledge test?
The Arkansas CDL knowledge assessment is a test of your knowledge of commercial driving regulations, safety procedures and vehicle operations. You must pass this assessment to get a Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP) which is required before taking the skills test for a full CDL. The assessment covers federal regulations, Arkansas specific rules, vehicle operation, safety regulations and traffic laws. Testing is done electronically at designated Arkansas State Police testing sites throughout the state.
Who needs to take the CDL knowledge test in Arkansas?
You need to take the assessment if you are getting your first CLP, adding a new endorsement, upgrading your CDL class, reinstating an expired CDL (over one year), or transferring a CDL from another state with new endorsements. All applicants must take the general knowledge assessment plus additional assessments for specific endorsements like Passenger (P), School Bus (S), Tank Vehicles (N), Hazardous Materials (H), or Doubles/Triples (T). Each endorsement has its own assessment for that specific vehicle or cargo type.
Why is the CDL knowledge test important?
The assessment ensures you have the knowledge to operate commercial motor vehicles safely. It verifies your understanding of regulations, safety practices, technical knowledge and emergency procedures. This helps to maintain safety standards and reduce accident risks on public roads. Commercial motor vehicles can cause a lot of damage in accidents because of their size and weight, so proper knowledge and training is essential before operating these vehicles. The knowledge assessment is the first step in ensuring you are prepared for the responsibility of commercial operating.
How does the Arkansas test match federal requirements?
The Arkansas CDL knowledge assessment follows Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration standards with Arkansas specific regulations. This ensures national consistency in commercial driver qualifications while addressing state specific requirements. Topics covered include general operating skills, air brake operations, combination vehicles and specific endorsements. This standardization means your Arkansas CDL will be recognized throughout the United States, and you can operate commercial motor vehicles across state lines as long as you meet age and other requirements for interstate commerce.
How many questions are on the Arkansas CDL knowledge test?
The Arkansas CDL knowledge assessments are multiple-choice questions with 4 possible answers for each question. The assessments will thoroughly test your knowledge of safety procedures, regulations and technical knowledge of commercial motor vehicles.
Here's a breakdown of the number of questions by assessment type:
- General Knowledge: 50 questions
- Air Brakes: 25 questions
- Combination Vehicles: 20 questions
- Passenger Endorsement: 20 questions

- Rely on your mirrors only
- Back as quickly as possible to minimize time spent in reverse
- Use a helper when possible
- Always back toward the right side
Answer: C. Use a helper when possible
What score do I need to pass?
You must answer 80% of questions correctly on each assessment to pass. For the General Knowledge assessment, this means 40 out of 50 questions. Air Brakes assessment requires 20 out of 25 correct answers. Combination Vehicles, Passenger Endorsement, School Bus Endorsement and Tank Vehicles Endorsement all require 16 out of 20 correct answers. The Hazmat Endorsement requires 24 out of 30 correct answers and the Doubles/Triples Endorsement requires 16 out of 20 correct answers. Each assessment is scored separately and you must pass each one individually.
What languages can I take the test in?
The CDL knowledge test in Arkansas is only available in English. Federal regulations require commercial drivers to read and speak English sufficiently to understand traffic signs, communicate with officials, complete records and understand shipping documents. This ensures all commercial drivers can safely navigate roadways, communicate with law enforcement and emergency services and properly handle documentation. There are no exceptions to this language requirement for CDL testing in Arkansas.
Can I use study aids during the test?
No study aids are allowed during the test. You cannot use notes, electronic devices, reference materials or calculators during the test. Testing areas are monitored and using prohibited materials will result in test failure. All personal items must be stored in a designated area during testing including:
- Cell phones and electronic devices
- Notes or cheat sheets
- CDL manuals
- Reference materials
- Calculators (unless authorized for certain questions)
Using prohibited materials during testing will result in immediate disqualification and may affect your ability to test again in the future.
How long do I have to complete the test?
There is no time limit to complete the test. Most applicants complete the general knowledge test in 60-90 minutes and most endorsement tests in 30-45 minutes. Plan accordingly if you are taking multiple tests in one visit. The testing facilities will provide sufficient time for you to complete the tests without rushing. If you have documented learning disabilities or other special needs, accommodations may be available with proper documentation.
What types of knowledge tests are available?
Arkansas offers several CDL knowledge tests depending on the class of CDL and endorsements you are seeking:

How do I prepare for the Arkansas CDL knowledge test?
Proper preparation is key to passing your CDL knowledge tests on the first attempt. Start by studying all relevant sections of the Arkansas CDL Manual for your license class and endorsements. Take our free Arkansas practice tests to identify areas to improve. Create a study schedule over several weeks rather than cramming and make flashcards for difficult concepts and technical terms.
Spend extra time on tough topics like air brakes and hazmat and review pre-trip inspection procedures. Pay attention to Arkansas specific regulations and prerequisites and study vehicle systems and components until you understand how they work. Remember the key to success is consistent study over time not last minute cramming as many applicants underestimate the technical knowledge especially for specialized endorsements.
Are practice tests available?
Our free Arkansas practice tests will help you identify knowledge gaps, build confidence through repeated practice, simulate the actual test environment and format. They allow you to track your progress, understand explanations for correct and incorrect answers and get familiar with the types of questions asked on the actual test. Our practice tests cover all CDL test categories and are updated regularly to reflect current testing standards. Using these practice tests has shown to increase first time pass rates.
How do I pass the CDL knowledge test?
To maximize your chances of success, start studying at least 2-3 weeks before your test date. Focus on understanding concepts not just memorizing answers and take our practice tests to identify and focus on weak areas. Make sure you get enough rest the night before your test and eat a good meal beforehand to stay focused. When taking the test, read questions completely before selecting answers and look for keywords like "always," "never" or "except" that can change a question's meaning. Remember choosing safety-oriented answers when unsure is often the best strategy.
Sample question: When should you use your turn signals?
A. Only when other vehicles are present
B. At least 100 feet before turning
C. Just as you begin to turn
D. Only when changing lanes
Answer: B. At least 100 feet before turning
How similar are practice tests to the actual test?
Our practice tests cover the same topics and format as the actual test, though specific questions differ. We design our questions to reflect the style, difficulty level and content of the actual Arkansas CDL knowledge test. Our practice tests help you get familiar with question formats and wording styles, content coverage and depth, time management during testing and critical thinking skills needed for test success. Focus on understanding concepts not just memorizing specific answers as the actual test draws from a large question bank and each test is unique.
Where do I take the CDL knowledge test?
You can take the CDL knowledge test at designated Arkansas State Police testing sites throughout the state. Not all locations offer CDL testing so check the Arkansas State Police website or call ahead to confirm. These testing locations have the special equipment and staff to administer CDL tests. Major testing locations are in Little Rock, Fayetteville, Jonesboro, Pine Bluff and other cities in Arkansas.
Do I need an appointment?
Yes, appointments are required for CDL knowledge tests in Arkansas. You can schedule through the Arkansas State Police website or by phone at 501-618-8000. Walk-ins are not accepted for CDL testing and you will be turned away without an appointment. Scheduling ensures you will be tested at your preferred time and location.
IMPORTANT: Testing appointments are booked several weeks in advance especially at busier locations. Schedule your test as early as possible to get your preferred date and time.
Can I take the test online?
No, all CDL knowledge tests must be taken in person at authorized Arkansas State Police testing sites. This is to ensure security, identity verification and test integrity. This is a federal requirement that applies to all states not just Arkansas. In-person testing prevents cheating and ensures the person getting the CDL is the one who demonstrated the knowledge.
What do I need to bring to the test?
For your test you will need to bring several required documents:
- A valid Arkansas driver's license
- Social Security card or number
- Proof of citizenship/legal residency (birth certificate, passport, permanent resident card, etc.)
- Proof of Arkansas residency (two documents showing your Arkansas address)
- Current DOT Medical Certificate (Form MCSA-5876)
- Completed CDL application
- Payment for applicable fees (cash, check or credit card)
If applying for a Hazmat endorsement you will need additional identification documents for the security threat assessment.
Additional items to bring:
- Reading glasses if needed
- Your appointment confirmation
- Your medical history for medical certification
All documents must be original or certified copies as photocopies are not accepted. If you are unsure of document requirements call the Arkansas State Police at 501-618-8000 before your appointment.
How early should I arrive?
Arrive 15-20 minutes early to allow time for document verification, application processing, fee payment and to get settled before the test. If you are late you may have to reschedule. First time applicants should arrive 30 minutes early to allow time for paperwork processing. Traffic and parking at testing locations can be unpredictable so plan accordingly.
What if I pass?
After passing all required knowledge tests you will receive a Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP) valid for 12 months. This permit has several conditions:
- You must wait at least 14 days before taking the skills test
- You can only operate with a qualified CDL holder in the passenger seat
- No passengers are allowed except supervisors, trainees or examiners
- No hazmat transport is allowed
- Other restrictions may apply based on vehicle type/endorsements
The endorsements you passed tests for will be listed on your CLP.
What can I do with my CLP?
With your CLP you can practice operating commercial motor vehicles while supervised before taking your skills test. This practice time is crucial to develop the skills needed to pass the behind-the-wheel test. Remember you must always have a licensed CDL holder with the proper class of license in the passenger seat when operating with a CLP.
How long are test scores valid?
Test scores are valid for 12 months, same as your CLP. If your CLP expires before you take the skills test you will have to retest all knowledge tests. There are no extensions on score validity so plan to take your skills test within the 12-month window to avoid having to retest. This ensures your knowledge is current when you get your full CDL.
What if I fail?
If you fail a knowledge test you will have to wait until the next business day to retest and you will only have to retest the sections you failed. Use our practice tests to focus on weak areas and review incorrect answers to understand why they were wrong. If you are struggling with certain topics consider studying with different methods. There is no limit to how many times you can retest but repeated failures may indicate you need more preparation.
Sample question: What happens if you fail a section of the test?
- A. Wait 30 days before retesting
- B. Retest at another location
- C. Wait until the next business day to retest
- D. Retest all sections, even those passed
Answer: C. Wait until the next business day to retest
How do I schedule the skills test after passing?
After holding your CLP for at least 14 days you can schedule your skills test by calling Arkansas State Police at 501-618-8000 or visiting their website. Make sure your CLP is valid and your medical certificate is current. You will need to arrange for a test vehicle that matches your CDL class, pay the skills test fee and choose a date and time from available slots. Skills tests are administered at designated Arkansas State Police testing locations and consist of a pre-trip inspection, basic vehicle control and on-road operating demonstration. Make sure you are prepared for all three parts before scheduling.
