The Oklahoma CDL knowledge test tests your knowledge of commercial driving regulations, vehicle operation, safety protocols and traffic laws. You must pass this test to get a Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP), which is a required step before taking the skills test for a full CDL. The test covers federal regulations and Oklahoma specific rules to make sure you have the knowledge to operate commercial motor vehicles safely in Oklahoma and across state lines if applicable.
Who needs to take the CDL knowledge test in Oklahoma?
You need to take the CDL knowledge test if you're in any of these situations. First, you're getting your first Commercial Learner's Permit. You'll also need it when adding a new endorsement to your existing CDL. You'll also need it when upgrading your CDL class, like moving from Class B to Class A. It's also required when reinstating an expired CDL that's been expired over one year or when transferring a CDL from another state and adding new endorsements.
Remember all applicants must take the general knowledge test. Depending on the vehicle type and cargo you'll be hauling you may also need additional tests for specific endorsements such as Passenger (P), School Bus (S), Tank Vehicles (N), Hazardous Materials (H), or Doubles/Triples (T).
Why is the CDL knowledge test important?
The CDL knowledge test ensures commercial drivers have the necessary knowledge to operate commercial motor vehicles safely. It verifies your understanding of regulations, safety practices, technical knowledge and emergency procedures. This helps maintain safety standards and reduces accident risks on public roads. Commercial motor vehicles can cause significant damage in accidents due to their size and weight, therefore proper knowledge and training is essential before operating these vehicles. The knowledge test is the first step in proving you're ready for the responsibility of commercial driving.
How does the Oklahoma test match federal requirements?
The Oklahoma CDL knowledge test follows Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration standards while incorporating state specific regulations. This ensures national consistency in commercial driver qualifications while addressing Oklahoma's specific requirements. Topics covered include general driving skills, air brake operations, combination vehicles and specific endorsements. Your Oklahoma CDL will be recognized throughout the United States, allowing you to operate commercial motor vehicles across state lines (as long as you meet age and other requirements for interstate commerce).
How many questions are on the Oklahoma CDL knowledge test?
Each CDL knowledge test contains multiple-choice questions with four possible answers for each question. The tests are designed to thoroughly evaluate your knowledge of safety procedures, regulations and technical aspects of commercial motor vehicles.
- General Knowledge: 50 questions
- Air Brakes: 25 questions
- Combination Vehicles: 20 questions
- Passenger Endorsement: 20 questions
- School Bus Endorsement: 20 questions
- Hazmat Endorsement: 30 questions
- Tank Vehicles Endorsement: 20 questions
- Doubles/Triples Endorsement: 20 questions
Sample question: During a pre-trip inspection you should check the kingpin and apron to ensure:
- The kingpin is bent at a 45-degree angle
- There's at least one inch of space between the upper and lower fifth wheel
- The visible part of the apron is not bent, cracked or broken
- The locking jaws are fully open around the kingpin
Answer: C. The visible part of the apron is not bent, cracked or broken
What score do I need to pass?
You must answer 80% of the questions correctly on each test to pass. For the General Knowledge test, this means getting at least 40 out of 50 questions correct. The Air Brakes test requires 20 correct answers out of 25 questions. For the Combination Vehicles test, you'll need 16 correct answers out of 20 questions. Same 80% passing threshold applies to all endorsement tests.
Important: Each test is scored separately and you must pass each one individually. If you fail one test but pass others, you'll only need to retake the failed test.
What languages can I take the test in?
The CDL knowledge test in Oklahoma is only available in English. Federal regulations require commercial drivers to read and speak English sufficiently to understand traffic signs, communicate with officials, complete records and understand shipping documents. This ensures all commercial drivers can safely navigate roadways, communicate with law enforcement and emergency services and properly handle documentation. As a CDL applicant you should know there are no exceptions to this language requirement for CDL testing in Oklahoma.
Can I use study aids during the test?
No, you cannot use notes, electronic devices, reference materials or calculators during the test. Testing areas are monitored and using prohibited materials will result in test failure. All personal items must be stored in a designated area during testing including cell phones and electronic devices, notes or cheat sheets, Commercial Driver License manuals, reference materials of any kind and calculators (unless specifically authorized for certain questions).
Remember using prohibited materials during testing will result in immediate disqualification and may affect your ability to test again in the future.
How long do I have to complete the test?
There is no time limit for the CDL knowledge tests but most applicants complete the general knowledge test in 60-90 minutes. Most endorsement tests take 30-45 minutes each. Plan accordingly if taking multiple tests in one visit. The Oklahoma DPS provides sufficient time to complete the tests without rushing. If you have documented learning disabilities or other special needs accommodations may be available with proper documentation.
What types of knowledge tests are available?
Oklahoma offers several CDL knowledge tests depending on the class of license and endorsements you need. The General Knowledge test is required for all CDLs. If you'll be operating a vehicle with air brakes you'll need the Air Brakes test. For Class A licenses the Combination Vehicles test is required.
Endorsement tests include the Passenger (P) Endorsement for buses, School Bus (S) Endorsement, Doubles/Triples (T) Endorsement, Tank Vehicle (N) Endorsement and Hazmat (H) Endorsement.
Each test covers specific knowledge for that class of vehicle or type of operation. You only need to take the tests relevant to the type of commercial driving you plan to do.
Sample question: When conducting an air brake check which of these is a proper procedure?
- Apply the foot brake and hold it for 10 seconds to check for air pressure loss
- Begin fanning off air pressure when the warning light activates at 30 psi
- Continue fanning off air pressure until the trailer protection valve closes at 60 psi
- Pump the brake pedal three times when checking hydraulic brake reserve
Answer: A. Apply the foot brake and hold it for 10 seconds to check for air pressure loss

How do I prepare for the Oklahoma CDL knowledge test?
To prepare for your Oklahoma CDL knowledge test start by studying all relevant sections of the Oklahoma CDL Manual for your license class and endorsements. Take our free practice tests to identify areas where you need more study. Creating a study schedule over several weeks rather than cramming will help with retention of information.
As a CDL applicant you should make flashcards for difficult concepts and technical terms and focus extra time on challenging topics like air brakes and hazmat regulations. Review the pre-trip inspection procedures thoroughly and pay attention to Oklahoma specific regulations and requirements while studying vehicle systems and components until you understand how they work. Familiarize yourself with all required documentation and procedures.
Remember the key to success is consistent study over time rather than last minute cramming. Many applicants underestimate the technical knowledge required especially for specialized endorsements.
Are practice tests available?
Yes! Our free Oklahoma practice tests will help you identify knowledge gaps in your understanding and build confidence through repeated practice. They simulate the actual test environment and format while allowing you to track your progress as you improve. They also provide explanations for both correct and incorrect answers to help you learn. Getting familiar with the types of questions asked on the actual test will make you more comfortable on test day.
Our practice tests cover all CDL test categories and are updated regularly to reflect current testing standards. Using practice tests has been shown to increase first attempt pass rates.
How do I pass the CDL knowledge test?
Follow these tips to maximize your chances of passing. Start studying at least 2-3 weeks before your test date and focus on understanding concepts rather than just memorizing answers. Take our practice tests to identify and focus on weak areas. Make sure to get enough rest the night before your test and eat a good meal before testing to stay focused.
When taking the test read questions completely before selecting answers and look for keywords like "always," "never," or "except" that can change a question's meaning. Choose safety-oriented answers when unsure. If the testing system allows, review all answers before submitting. Most importantly, stay calm and focused throughout the test.
Sample question: When backing a commercial motor vehicle you should:
- Back quickly to minimize time spent in reverse
- Rely solely on mirrors and never exit the vehicle
- Use a helper whenever possible to guide you
- Avoid backing toward the driver's side whenever possible
Answer: C. Use a helper whenever possible to guide you
How similar are practice tests to the actual test?
Our practice tests cover the same topics and format as the actual test, though specific questions differ. We design our questions to reflect the style, difficulty level and content of the actual Oklahoma CDL knowledge test. The practice tests help you become familiar with question formats and wording styles, content coverage and depth, time management during testing and critical thinking skills needed for test success.
Importantly, focus on understanding concepts rather than memorizing specific answers as the actual test draws from a large question bank and each test is unique.
Where do I take the CDL knowledge test?
You can take the CDL knowledge test at designated Oklahoma Department of Public Safety (DPS) offices that offer commercial licensing services. Not all DPS offices provide CDL testing, so check the DPS website or call ahead to confirm. Testing locations have special equipment and trained staff for CDL testing. Major testing locations are in Oklahoma City, Tulsa, Lawton and other cities throughout the state.
To find a test location near you visit: https://oklahoma.gov/service/locations/driving-auto-locations.html
Do I need an appointment?
Yes, appointments are recommended for CDL knowledge tests. You can schedule through the Oklahoma DPS website or by calling 405-425-2424. Some locations may accept walk-ins for CDL testing but wait times can be very long and you may not be able to test that day if capacity is reached. So scheduling an appointment ensures you'll be tested at your preferred time and location.
Can I take the test online?
No, you cannot take the test online. All CDL knowledge tests must be taken in person at authorized DPS offices to ensure security, identity verification and test integrity. This is a federal requirement that applies to all states, not just Oklahoma. In-person testing prevents cheating and ensures the person receiving the CDL is the one who demonstrated the knowledge.
What do I need to bring to the test?
For your CDL knowledge test you'll need to bring several important documents. Start with your valid Oklahoma driver's license and Social Security card/number. You'll also need proof of citizenship/legal residency such as a birth certificate, passport or permanent resident card. Additionally, bring proof of Oklahoma residency (two documents showing your Oklahoma address) and your current DOT Medical Certificate (Form MCSA-5876).
Remember you'll need to complete a CDL application and bring payment for applicable fees (cash, check or credit card). If you're seeking a Hazardous Materials endorsement you'll need additional identification documents for the security threat assessment.
Don't forget reading glasses if you need them, your appointment confirmation and knowledge of your medical history for medical certification. All documents must be original or certified copies—photocopies are not accepted. If you're unsure about document requirements contact the DPS before your appointment.
How early should I arrive?
Arrive 15-20 minutes early to allow time for document verification, application processing, fee payment and getting settled before the test begins. If you arrive late you may have to reschedule. First-time applicants should arrive 30 minutes early to allow time for paperwork processing. Traffic and parking at DPS offices can be unpredictable so plan accordingly.
What if I pass?
If you pass your CDL knowledge test(s) you'll receive a Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP) valid for 12 months with specific conditions. You must wait at least 14 days before taking the skills test. While operating with your CLP you can only drive with a qualified CDL holder in the passenger seat and cannot transport passengers except supervisors, trainees or examiners. Furthermore you cannot transport hazardous materials and other restrictions may apply based on vehicle type/endorsements.
The specific endorsements you passed tests for will be included on your CLP.
What can I do with my CLP?
Your CLP allows you to practice operating commercial motor vehicles while supervised before taking your skills test. This practice time is crucial to develop the skills needed to pass the behind-the-wheel test. As a CLP holder you can gain valuable experience operating the same type of commercial motor vehicle you plan to drive after obtaining your full CDL but always with a qualified CDL holder supervising you.
How long are test scores valid?
Test scores are valid for 12 months, the same duration as your CLP. If your CLP expires before you complete the skills test you'll need to retake all knowledge tests. There are no extensions on score validity so plan to complete your skills test within the 12-month window to avoid having to retest. This ensures your knowledge is current when you get your full CDL.
What if I fail?
If you fail a CDL knowledge test you'll need to wait until the next business day to retest. The good news is you only need to retest the sections you failed, not the entire battery of tests. Use our practice tests to focus on weak areas. Moreover, reviewing incorrect answers to understand why they were wrong will help you succeed on your next attempt.
Remember there's no limit to how many times you can retest but repeated failures may indicate you need more preparation or a different study approach.
Sample question: If your vehicle has ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) you should:
- Pump the brakes when making an emergency stop
- Apply less pressure to the brake pedal than with conventional brakes
- Brake normally, as ABS only activates when wheels are about to lock up
- Downshift to a lower gear before applying the brakes
Answer: C. Brake normally, as ABS only activates when wheels are about to lock up
How do I schedule the skills test after passing?
After holding your CLP for at least 14 days you can schedule your skills test by calling 405-425-2196. Before calling make sure your CLP is valid and your medical certificate is current. You'll need to arrange for a test vehicle that matches your CDL class and pay the skills test fee ($25 for Class A/B, $15 for Class C). When calling you can choose a date and time from available slots.
Note: Skills tests are done at a different location than knowledge tests. The skills test includes a pre-trip inspection, basic vehicle control and on-road driving demonstration. Be prepared for all three.
